Metro Retail Stores Group Inc. (MRSGI) and the Local Government Unit of Ormoc formalized a strategic partnership for Metro Ormoc, a planned three-story retail facility at the corner of Real, Lopez Jaena, and Rizal Streets, a central site bounded by three major thoroughfares.

Site handover and groundbreaking are targeted for late 2026, followed by full-scale construction mobilization in early 2027. The development will feature a Metro Supermarket and Department Store, complemented by retail spaces for food and service tenants and dedicated parking facilities.

Expanding MRSGI’s Visayas presence

The Ormoc project reinforces MRSGI’s regional growth strategy, bringing its retail formats to primary urban centers across the Visayas. As a major commercial hub in Eastern Visayas, Ormoc presents key opportunities for expanded retail operations and economic collaboration.

“Ormoc serves as an important commercial and economic center in Eastern Visayas, making it a strategic location for expanding our retail presence in the region,” said Joselito Orense, President and COO of MRSGI. “With Metro Ormoc, we are bringing together our retail formats in a development that responds to local consumer needs while creating opportunities for local businesses, suppliers, and workers to participate.”

Beyond broadening options for consumers, the new development will stimulate the local economy by creating direct and indirect employment across construction, retail operations, facilities management, and logistics.

Crucial to this expansion is a shared commitment to community integration and supporting local trade. MRSGI plans to dedicate commercial space for regional vendors and local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), while incorporating Ormoc’s agricultural produce, native delicacies, and artisanal products into its retail offerings.

“When we do business in a new site, we want it to be a partnership with the communities we work with. Metro found alignment in Ormoc City wanting to showcase its native products and delicacies. Metro is proud of our Visayan roots,” said Sherisa Nuesa, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of MRSGI.

Building for Ormoc’s retail market

During the contract signing, Metro Retail executives presented the proposed design of the new building to city officials, providing an initial look at the planned development.

Designed to integrate retail and sustainability, the building will incorporate roof-deck solar panel infrastructure as part of its energy-efficiency commitments.

As the project moves forward, MRSGI and the City Government of Ormoc will continue to work together on opportunities for local business participation and other initiatives that can support the city’s continued economic growth.

To date, Metro Retail operates a total of 84 branches across Luzon and the Visayas under the formats Metro Supermarket, Metro Department Store, Super Metro Hypermarket, Metro Value Mart, and Metro Home Improvement and Lifestyle. In line with its commitment to sustainable growth and strong corporate governance, MRSGI continues to expand its retail network.
